15 Practical Gift Ideas for Dog Lovers Who Travel With Their Dogs

Angel sitting in a seat on a car ride

Buying a gift for someone who loves their dog can be easy. Buying one they’ll actually use is a little harder.

When we think about gifts for dog owners, we tend to come back to the same question: would this make traveling with Angel easier, cleaner, safer, or more comfortable?

That narrows the list pretty quickly.

We travel with Angel on road trips, camping trips, cabin stays, vacation rentals, day trips, and hikes, so most of the things on this list have become part of our regular routine. Some are small enough for a stocking, while others work better as a larger holiday or birthday gift.

We also like this approach when shopping during Prime Day and other holiday sales. Instead of buying something simply because it’s discounted, we start with products we already know are useful and then check whether any of those items have a good current offer.

What Makes a Good Gift for a Dog Lover Who Travels?

For us, the most useful gifts aren’t necessarily the fanciest ones. They’re usually the things that solve a small problem over and over again.

We especially like gifts that:

  • Make road trips easier.
  • Pack without taking up too much room.
  • Help keep Angel comfortable away from home.
  • Make cleanup easier.
  • Help us stay organized.
  • Can be used on several different kinds of trips instead of only once.

If you’re shopping for someone who is just starting to travel with their dog, our Travel Accessories We Use for Our Miniature Schnauzer guide goes deeper into some of the gear that has worked well for us:

Here are the 15 gifts we’d put at the top of our list.

Everyday Dog Travel Gifts We Use Again and Again

1. Collapsible Bowls

Collapsible bowls are one of those simple things that don’t seem especially exciting until you start traveling with a dog.

We keep them with Angel’s travel supplies because they take up very little space and work whether we’re staying in a vacation rental, camping, taking a day trip, or stopping during a road trip.

They’d make a practical smaller gift for someone who travels frequently with their dog.

2. Dog Travel Water Bottle

We normally stop every couple of hours during longer drives so Angel can stretch her legs and get a drink. Having her own travel water bottle makes those stops easier because we don’t have to pull out a bowl every time.

We also use one for walks and outings where carrying a regular water bowl would be inconvenient.

For someone who takes their dog everywhere, this is the kind of gift that can end up being used far more often than expected.

3. Travel Dog Bed

Angel having her own place to settle makes a difference when we’re away from home.

We take a dog bed with us for vacation rentals, cabins, camping trips, and other overnight stays. It gives her a familiar place to rest rather than expecting her to figure out a new sleeping spot every time we arrive somewhere.

A travel bed can be especially useful for someone whose dog goes on overnight trips regularly.

4. Dog Harness

A harness is another piece of Angel’s gear that gets used constantly.

She wears one during our outings and trips, and we prefer having a good harness available rather than relying only on her collar when we’re walking in unfamiliar places.

A replacement or extra harness can also be useful for travelers who like keeping one packed with their dog’s travel gear.

5. Waste Bags

Waste bags may not be the glamorous holiday gift on this list, but they’re certainly one of the products we use the most.

We keep them available in Angel’s travel supplies because we need them at campgrounds, rest stops, parks, trails, vacation rentals, and ordinary walks.

They’re easy to pair with another small travel item if you’re putting together a dog-themed gift basket.

6. Travel Wipes

Travel wipes have earned a permanent spot in our dog gear.

We use them for quick cleanup when Angel gets dirty paws or needs to be cleaned up before going back into the vehicle, camper, or vacation rental.

They’re especially handy when a full bath isn’t practical.

7. Dog Raincoat

A raincoat gives us another option when we’re traveling and the weather isn’t cooperating.

We don’t always want a little rain to end an outing, and having Angel’s raincoat with us can help keep her coat from becoming completely soaked.

It’s also one of those gifts a dog owner might not buy immediately for themselves but may appreciate once they have it.

8. Airtight Food Container

We use an airtight container for Angel’s food when we travel.

It keeps her food organized and makes packing much simpler for cabins, vacation rentals, and camping trips. We also prefer knowing her food has its own dedicated container instead of relying on an opened food bag during a trip.

For someone who regularly travels overnight with a dog, this can be a surprisingly useful gift.

Gifts for Hiking, Road Trips and More Difficult Outings

9. Dog Carry Pouch

A dog carry pouch became much more important to us once we started encountering places where Angel could comfortably walk part of an outing but not necessarily all of it.

We used her pouch during our trip to Oconee County, South Carolina. The terrain going down toward Issaqueena Falls was too steep for Angel, so she rode in the pouch until we reached the waterfall area and again for the climb back up.

At Station Cove Falls, she was able to hike about half the distance each way. We carried her in the pouch for the rest.

That experience changed the way we look at this piece of gear. It’s not something we bring because we expect Angel to be carried everywhere. We bring it because it gives us another option when the terrain or distance becomes more than she should handle.

The Dog Sling We Now Use With Angel

Our previous dog carry pouch is currently unavailable. We’ve since purchased and tested a Noah & Paw dog sling with Angel after finding one that could accommodate her weight. She had outgrown our earlier slings, so we were especially pleased with how this one fit her at 17 pounds.

The soft fur lining reminds us of a blanket. We can fully open the sling so Angel can climb in, then button it around her once she lies down. We also attach the safety clip inside to her harness.

The wide, adjustable strap lets us change how the sling sits so it feels comfortable for the person carrying her and for Angel. Fit was our biggest concern because she’s close to the upper end of the listed 5–18-pound weight range, but this sling has fit her well during our use.

That’s our experience with Angel’s particular size and build. Check your dog’s measurements and the manufacturer’s sizing and use instructions before choosing a carrier.

10. Dog Seat Belt

A dog seat belt isn’t the cutest gift on the list, but it’s one of the practical pieces of travel gear we consider part of our road-trip routine.

Angel rides secured in our vehicle, and having a dedicated dog restraint means it doesn’t get forgotten when we’re packing everything else.

For a dog owner who takes frequent road trips, this is the kind of practical gift that supports something they’re already doing.

11. Personalized ID Tag

We also consider identification part of Angel’s regular travel setup.

A personalized ID tag is especially useful for a dog that spends time away from home, whether that’s at a campground, vacation rental, park, hiking trail, or road-trip stop.

It’s also one of the easier gifts to personalize without adding something bulky to someone’s travel gear.

12. Pet First Aid Kit

Our pet first aid kit isn’t something we hope to need, but we’ve been glad to have basic supplies with us.

We’ve used travel supplies for things such as a splinter and dealing with sand spurs. Those were small problems, but they reinforced why we like having basic pet first-aid supplies where we can reach them.

A kit can be a particularly thoughtful gift for someone who hikes, camps, or takes frequent road trips with their dog.

Grooming Gifts for Dog Owners Who Travel

Some of our favorite travel-related products never actually leave home.

We groom Angel ourselves, and keeping up with her grooming before a trip makes traveling easier. We don’t want to discover right before leaving that her nails need attention or that we’re trying to squeeze a full grooming session into an already busy packing day.

For someone who also grooms their dog at home, grooming equipment can make a very practical larger gift.

13. Nail Grinder

We use a nail grinder as part of Angel’s grooming routine.

Keeping up with her nails is especially useful before trips where we know she’ll be doing more walking than usual. We would rather take care of it at home than realize halfway through a trip that her nails need attention.

A nail grinder is a useful gift for someone who is already comfortable maintaining their dog’s nails at home.

14. Dog Grooming Table

Our grooming table is one of the pieces of equipment that makes grooming Angel at home much more manageable.

Having a dedicated surface gives us a consistent place for brushing, clipping, trimming, drying, and other grooming tasks.

This is obviously a larger gift than wipes or collapsible bowls, but for someone who already grooms their dog at home, it can be much more useful than another decorative dog-themed present.

15. Hair Dryer

After bathing Angel, we use a hair dryer to blow-dry her coat.

For us, the dryer is part of the grooming setup rather than something we bought specifically for travel, but it helps us get Angel ready before we leave and makes at-home grooming easier between trips.

It’s a good example of why our gift list isn’t limited to things that physically go into the vehicle. Anything that helps make traveling with a dog easier before departure can still be a useful gift for a traveling dog owner.

How We Shop for Dog Travel Gifts During Prime Day and Holiday Sales

Sale events can make it tempting to shop backward: find the biggest discount first and then decide whether the product is useful.

We prefer doing the opposite.

We start with the things we know we actually use with Angel. Then, when Prime Day, Black Friday, holiday sales, or another promotion comes around, we check those products to see whether the current price makes sense.

For us, that helps avoid buying something simply because it happens to be on sale.

When shopping for someone else, we would also think about the way they travel.

A family that spends weekends camping may get more use from collapsible bowls, a travel water bottle, and a pet first-aid kit. Someone who stays mostly in cabins and vacation rentals might appreciate a dog bed, wipes, or an airtight food container.

A person who grooms their own dog may get far more value from a nail grinder or grooming table than another travel accessory.

The best gift on this list really depends on what problem you want to solve for them.

Small Gifts vs. Larger Gifts

If we were putting together a smaller gift or stocking, we’d look first at:

  • Waste bags
  • Travel wipes
  • Collapsible bowls
  • Personalized ID tag
  • Dog travel water bottle

For a more substantial gift, we’d consider:

  • Travel dog bed
  • Dog carry pouch
  • Pet first-aid kit
  • Grooming equipment
  • Hair dryer

Another option is building a small dog-travel gift basket using two or three things that work together. Collapsible bowls, a water bottle, wipes, and waste bags would all fit the same theme without adding random products simply to make the gift look bigger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good gift for someone who travels everywhere with their dog?

We’d start with something they’ll use repeatedly, such as collapsible bowls, a travel water bottle, a dog bed, wipes, a harness, or a pet first-aid kit.

The best choice depends on whether they spend more time road-tripping, camping, hiking, or staying in vacation rentals.

What if the dog owner already has most of the basic travel gear?

Consumable or easy-to-replace items can still work well. Waste bags and travel wipes get used up, while an additional set of bowls or another water bottle can stay permanently packed in a vehicle or travel bag.

For someone who already has the basics, grooming equipment may also be a better direction.

Is a dog carry pouch only useful for small dogs?

We use ours with our Miniature Schnauzer because it gives us a way to carry her when a trail becomes too steep or she’s ready for a break.

Any carrying product should be chosen according to the dog’s size, weight, physical condition, and the manufacturer’s limits.

Are grooming supplies really travel gifts?

For us, they are.

Home grooming is part of how we prepare Angel before trips. Keeping her nails, coat, paws, beard, and other grooming needs taken care of before departure makes the actual trip easier.

Should I wait for Prime Day or another sale to buy dog travel gear?

We wouldn’t buy something simply because it’s marked down.

Our approach is to decide which product would actually be useful first and then check the current price and availability during major sale events. That keeps the purchase focused on something the recipient is likely to use.

Final Thoughts on Gifts for Dog Lovers Who Travel

We’d rather give a dog-loving traveler something practical that ends up in their travel bag than something that sits on a shelf.

That’s why most of our favorite gift ideas come from things we already use with Angel. Her bowls, water bottle, bed, harness, carry pouch, first-aid supplies, grooming equipment, and other travel gear all solve small problems that come up again and again.

You certainly don’t need all 15.

Choose the one that matches how the person actually travels with their dog. That’s usually a much better gift than simply picking the most expensive item or the biggest discount.

For even more planning ideas, our The Ultimate Guide to Traveling With a Dog brings together many of the routines and lessons we’ve learned while traveling with Angel:
